The Vancouver Japanese Gardeners Association received training by Professor Mori and for many years maintained the Garden and is still active today. In 2015, the Nitobe Memorial Garden History Committee was established to encourage a cooperative working relationship between the local Japanese Canadian community and the University of British Columbia. The committee’s aim is to see Nitobe Memorial Garden recognized as a significant Japanese Canadian heritage site. In 2018, the Nitobe Memorial Garden History Committee and UBC jointly prepared an application to the Historic Sites and Monument’s Board of Canada to nominate Nitobe Memorial Garden as a place of national historic significance. This designation, if received, will help assure the Garden’s protection so that it may serve as an important landmark in the history of the Japanese Canadian community.
