Volunteer Eyal at the Zero Waste station
Ivana Zelenika, PhD Candidate at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES); Dr. Tara Moreau and Dr. Jiaying Zhao research ways to reduce contamination of recycling and compost bins at public events in their peer-reviewed paper, “Toward zero waste events: Reducing contamination in waste streams with volunteer assistance.” Their research discovered that volunteer staff assistance reduced contamination (incorrect waste sorting) by up to 97% at our annual Apple Festival. This means less garbage going to landfills!
