Join us for a curriculum-connected online workshop this October to engage your classroom in the delicious diversity of apples.  

This program aligns with the BC Curriculum, enhances student engagement, and fosters environmental literacy.   

What: Through the lens of apple diversity, your classroom will have a unique hybrid learning experience! The Hybrid Apple Diversity Workshop invites K–7 and 8-12 teachers and students across Metro Vancouver B.C. to explore delicious local and native apple diversity and grow students’ connections to science and nature. Inspire your classroom with experiential learning on topics such as plant science, nutrition, gardening, sustainability and conservation, environmental stewardship, and First Nations knowledge—all aligned with BC Curriculum at all grade levels, and to the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Hosted by the UBC Botanical Garden Schools Program, this workshop blends live sessions with provided teacher-led, hands-on activities that bring nature-based learning directly to school grounds and local communities.

Connect with the UBC Botanical Garden Schools Program Team and other students from all over Metro Vancouver BC. This free learning experience will involve:

  • Interactive online activities and presentations  
  • Experiential Learning in the school or community grounds 
  • Applied gardening and sustainable practices 
  • Hands on activities and experiments   

Topics Covered in our 2025 Workshop:  

  • Apple diversity (local and native, distribution, Indigenous culture and Stewardship, nutrition and ecology) 
  • Apple tree life cycle and propagation 
  • Apple diversity conservation and sustainable practices.

The workshop is open to teachers and students in grades K–7 and 8–12 from schools across Metro Vancouver, BC.

No, the workshop is completely free for all participating schools or classrooms.

The workshop uses a hybrid format, combining interactive online sessions delivered by the Schools Program at UBC Botanical Garden team with teacher-led, hands-on activities at your school or in your local community.

Topics include apple diversity, plant science, nutrition, gardening, sustainability, environmental stewardship, conservation, and traditional knowledge.

Yes, all activities and lessons are designed to align with the BC Curriculum. You can find the unit plan with curriculum connections HERE.

The activities will be ready to download on Oct 1st during the first session at the top of this page.

Teachers can select many activities as they like considering the grade level fit, time, and materials resources available. Although they are not all mandatory, there is a prize for the classroom that completes the most activities and submits them to the Schools Program using the link provided during the first session.

There is one live session on Oct 8th where students or teachers can share their activities and reflections. In addition, Oct 15th is a culmination day for students to share their final reflections and activities. Prizes will be also given away that day.
