Blueberries, written by Lauren Jackson, Douglas Justice and Tara Moreau

Our staff Lauren Jackson, Douglas Justice and Tara Moreau recently wrote an article on blueberries for The Canadian Encyclopedia. Did you know that “[studies] have shown that they are one of the richest sources of antioxidants of any fresh fruit or vegetable. Blueberries also contain anthocyanins (“antho” means flowering plant, and “cyanin” means blue), which are what give blueberries their blue colour. Blueberries are one of the richest sources of these pigments of any fruit, which have been shown to support heart health and blood sugar regulation. Blueberry consumption is also associated with a reduced risk of type 2 (late onset) diabetes and mitigating inflammation, and may improve memory and other aspects of cognition” (paragraph 13).

    Thank you for your report.

I wish to learn more. More about low bush blueberry, high bush blueberry, high bush huckleberry, and i’m coming around to low bush huckleberry in central BC. Question i’m on track???

I cannot to date, find any information to central BC. Some reports do not state Blueberries growing west of the Ontario, Manitoba border.

I have picked blueberries (blue) and (dark) South of # 7 highway in S. Ontario. Are these the same as in found in central BC?

I am of the opinion there are 3 species and maybe 4 speices growing wild in N Central BC.
