When most people think of outdoor adventures, activities like hiking, camping, or mountain biking often come to mind. But how about tree climbing? For Tom Zadorsky, founder of Cultivara Tree Tours, tree climbing is more than just a pastime—it’s a passion, a career, and a means to connect people with nature in an entirely new way.
A Leap from the Office to the Outdoors
Tom’s journey into tree climbing began in 2020 when he left his office job to pursue a career in the great outdoors. “I didn’t know it was a job before I started, but I just fell in love from the first day,” Tom shared. This newfound passion for arboriculture soon evolved into a business idea, one he nurtured for years before deciding to take the plunge.
The catalyst? The birth of his first son. “If you’re not going to do it now, when are you going to do it?” he recalled. With that motivation, Cultivara Tree Tours was born, launching this May in collaboration with the UBC Botanical Garden.
Partnering with UBC Botanical Garden
The partnership between Cultivara and UBC Botanical Garden began almost a year ago when Tom met Ian Green at the garden’s tree walk. “I just threw the idea out there,” Tom said. That spontaneous conversation eventually led to meetings, discussions, and approvals, culminating in a collaboration both parties are excited about.
Getting everyone on board, however, wasn’t without its challenges. “Tree climbing is a bit niche. It’s not something most people have heard of,” Tom admitted. Yet, through demonstrations and clear communication about the benefits, they managed to gain the necessary support, including navigating logistical hurdles like insurance.
Aligning with UBC’s Environmental Goals
Tree climbing at UBC Botanical Garden offers more than just a thrilling experience; it provides a deeper understanding of trees and forest ecosystems. Tom believes that everyone who climbs leaves with a renewed perspective. “People always come down and say the same thing: ‘I see trees differently now.’”
This aligns seamlessly with the garden’s mission to foster environmental stewardship and connect people to nature. Each climb not only offers a personal adventure but also serves as a gateway to appreciating and protecting our natural world.
Future Visions and Expanding Horizons
As Cultivara Tree Tours prepares for its official launch, the team envisions expanding to more locations and introducing more people to the world of tree climbing. “There are amazing trees in B.C. and a culture of enjoying the outdoors,” Tom said. “We want to teach people about trees and our forests, creating more ‘tree champions’ to support conservation.”
With pre-launch tours in April and a full launch in May, Cultivara invites everyone to experience tree climbing firsthand. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or simply curious, the experience promises a unique view of both trees and the incredible ecosystem they support.
