In a world that often feels rushed and overwhelming, stepping into a quiet clearing can feel like coming home. Nature bathing—a nature-based mindfulness practice—offers a chance to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with what really matters.
Benefits of Nature Bathing
- Lowers Stress and Boosts Mood
Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce cortisol levels (a key stress hormone), support healthy blood pressure, and improve heart rate variability in some individuals. Many people report feeling more relaxed, grounded, and emotionally balanced after just one session.
Additionally, BC’s native evergreens release a pleasant scent and emit phytoncides—natural essential oils believed to support immune function. Some research suggests the positive effects of exposure to phytoncides can continue for days or even weeks.
- Can inspire creative thinking
By unplugging from digital distractions and tuning into the natural world, nature bathing can help quiet the mind and invite a sense of calm. Noticing how light and gentle wind influences the shapes and colours of the trees may awaken a childlike sense of wonder, which can encourage creative thinking and emotional reflection.
- Deepens Your Connection to Nature
Regular nature bathing can foster a sense of awe, gratitude, and kinship with the earth. This deepened connection not only supports personal well-being, but also nurtures care and responsibility for the natural world around us.
Nature Nurtures – Guided Nature Bathing and Hatha Yoga at the Garden
On August 31st, Nature Nurtures invites you to experience the serenity of nature bathing paired with a guided Hatha yoga session—held in Wharton Glade, a tranquil space surrounded by towering Douglas firs and filtered sunlight that feels miles away from the city, right here at UBC Botanical Garden.
