Patterns in Nature: Fibonacci, Plant Growth, and Evolution

Grade 10

Exploring how inherited plant patterns may support survival. Topics Covered: Fibonacci-like spiral, DNA, genetic variation, natural selection, evolution

This Grade 10 Science resource introduces students to patterns in the natural
world through conifer cones, pinecones, leaves, flowers, and spirals. The lesson focuses
on two main patterns: Fibonacci-like spiral counts in cones and golden angle leaf
spacing.
The lesson connects these patterns to DNA, inherited traits, variation, natural
selection, and evolution. Students consider how efficient growth patterns may improve
sunlight exposure, reduce overlap, support seed packing, and increase reproductive
success. A broader “small patterns to larger patterns” search is included only as an
optional extension.
