It’s been a memorable summer in the trees at UBC Botanical Garden.
Nearly 1,000 people have now climbed into the canopy with Cultivara Tree Tours since it first began at the Garden, including more than 500 guests this season alone.
Behind those numbers are hundreds of individual adventures. We’ve watched nervous first-time climbers discover their confidence as they make their way higher into the forest. We’ve seen parents and children encourage each other through the experience, celebrations after returning to the ground and groups fall unexpectedly quiet when they first look out across the forest and ocean from above.
And some of the most beautiful climbing of the season is still ahead.
Through August and into early fall, Canopy Expeditions take small groups on a 2–3 hour journey into the upper reaches of the Garden’s forest, eventually reaching heights of up to 50 metres with expansive views across the forest, ocean and mountains beyond.
As the days gradually shorten, Sunset Expeditions bring the experience into the final hours of the day, as evening light moves through the forest and across the Salish Sea. These climbs have become a favourite for birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions.
“What a unique and unforgettable experience! We climbed a magnificent Grand Fir, and it was absolutely incredible. Being up in the treetops with panoramic views of the beach, ocean, and surrounding landscape was truly breathtaking…I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for a one-of-a-kind adventure!”

No previous climbing experience or special level of fitness is required. Battery-powered climbing systems are available to assist with the ascent, making the upper canopy accessible to a surprisingly wide range of climbers.
Late summer is one of the most beautiful times to experience the canopy. With Expeditions intentionally kept to small groups and only a limited number of climbs offered each week, we encourage booking early before the season comes to a close.
