This multi-stage lesson invites students to experience the vibrant connection between mathematics and the natural world by exploring patterns and symmetry in a garden setting.
Designed for Grade 2, this resource directly aligns with the big ideas, content standards, and curricular competencies of the BC mathematics curriculum. Before their garden visit, students will build foundational vocabulary and start to understand how to Ind patterns and symmetry in nature through a movement-based activity, educational video, and summative discussion. During their time at UBC Botanical Garden or in a local, outdoor learning space, students will engage in play-based learning to embark on a hunt to Ind patterns and symmetry as well as create their own patterns. Back in the classroom, they will then have the chance to extend and solidify their learning by completing a symmetry art activity. This multi-modal and comprehensive learning experience ensures all learners can participate and discover how math can be fun, hands-on, and all around us!
