In this unit, students will use secondary concepts in mathematics to estimate the biomass of a native tree. They will measure the features of a native tree by estimating the diameter, circumference, and height. They will then use those measurements to approximate the biomass using an online government resource. Then, students will have a discussion about the importance of trees, and the significance of biomass, and the significance of trees to our ecosystem. Through this process, students will practice their estimation skills in a real-world context, and reflect on how mathematics helps us understand living things in the environment.
