Other Gardens & Areas

A series of small gardens of special interest and naturalized areas dot the grounds of UBC Botanical Garden.

Pacific Slope Garden

The Pacific Slope Garden, which is still under development, contains flora native to coastal British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California. The first plantings for this garden feature, which connects the Garry Oak Meadow Garden with the BC Rainforest Garden, were made in 2011. The area is a showcase for plants adapted to a warming climate with longer, drier summers.

Arbour Garden

The Arbour is a massive wooden structure constructed of large timbers and tilted screens that support a variety of climbing plants and form the leafy architectural backdrop for the Food Garden to the north and the Contemporary Garden to the south. In spring, purple wisterias drip elegantly from the high beams, and honeysuckles (Lonicera) and Clematis adorn the posts, while in autumn, the Arbour is a blaze of colour from the turning leaves of Boston ivy and Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus species).

Contemporary Garden

Located north of the Arbour, the Contemporary Garden is an open, grassy area surrounded by lush borders filled with a variety of flowering trees, shrubs and perennials chosen for botanical interest and spring and summer display. The area is a favourite for events and strolling.
