Learn tips and techniques for making your very own herbarium vouchers of native plants. There will be hands-on instruction on collecting, pressing and mounting techniques to prepare specimens suitable for creative art and scientific projects. Participants will go for a walk in the garden to collect native plants and discover how specimens are curated in herbarium for scientific research.
Participants will gain hands-on experience with:
- Collecting specific plants from the UBC Botanical Garden
- Pressing and drying plants to make a herbarium voucher
- Learning how dried plant collection is curated for scientific research
- Mounting dried plant specimens onto paper
Beryl Zhuang is the Curatorial Coordinator at the UBC Botanical Garden where she is responsible for the plant data management. She graduated with an M.Sc in bioinformatics from UBC and enjoys analyzing biodiversity data. She is passionate about making beautiful specimens for plant documentation.
Linda Jennings is the Assistant Curator at the UBC Herbarium at Beaty Biodiversity Museum, where she cares for, teaches, and supports research with UBC’s century-old collection. She earned both her B.Sc. and M.Sc. from UBC where she studied a rare sunflower, and has a great interest in the history of botany, especially collectors and their collections and spends much of her time relaxing and playing in the garden.
Important Notes: Please bring pruning shears or secateurs if you have them. Gardening gloves are optional but recommended. Please dress for the weather and bring footwear suitable for all terrains. This workshop will go ahead rain or shine. This workshop will be indoors and outdoors. Please bring your lunch. Light snacks will be provided.
Cancellation Policies: A $5.00 processing fee per attendee is charged if cancellation notice is less than 7 days prior to your scheduled program. There is no fee for transferring the registration to another person. Cancellations can be made by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org. In the event that a program is cancelled by UBC Botanical Garden, we will offer the option of transferring to another program or obtaining a full refund.
